University Department of Zoology
The Department was established in 1955 as P.G.wing of Bihar
University. During the last fifty five years of its glorious existence as an ideal centre for
teaching and research in Zoology, It has carved a niche for itself in India. Approximately 270
persons have been awarded doctorate degree of Ranchi University under the guidance of past and
present faculty members, and more than 1600 research papers have been published by them. The
department has the distinction of carrying out pioneering research in the field of fish
endocrinology, ecology and environmental sciences helminthology, human genetics, ethno-medical
zoology, and wildlife management.
The Department has got expertise in different fields of research work in Zoology and conducts
regular research guidance activity in bioremediation, environmental microbiology, pollution
ecology,
industrial toxicology, Stress Physiology, Insects Taxonomy & Biodiversity, Fish Physiology &
endocrinology, stored product entomology, amelioration through plant extracts,
Paedobiology, limnology, vermitechnology, histochemistry, etc.

A number of students are pursuing their research work under various research fellowship schemes (UGC/CSIR etc.). The department runs a self finance course in M.Sc. in Enviromental Science.
