The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on 24th September, 1969 (100th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi). It was the dream and idea of Mahatma Gandhi to involve students in the task of National Service and get to know the pulse of rural life. The cardinal principle of the programme is that it is organised by the students themselves and both students and teachers through their combined participation in social services, get a sense of involvement in the task of National development. The basic aim of NSS is to develop the personality of students through community service. NSS believes in the motto “Not me But you”. The NSS started with 40,000 volunteers in 37 universities and +2 level institutions. Today, it has more than 40 lacs of volunteers. The NSS volunteer strength of Ranchi University is 10,200. The following programmes have been undertaken by the NSS units under Ranchi University:

(a) Tree plantation (b) Blood donation camp (c) Health/Eye/Immunisation camp (d) Digital India (e) Beti Bacho-Beti Padao (f) Skill India (g) Startup India (h) River and soil conservation (i) Fit India (j) Road safety month (k) Swachha Bharat mission (l) Pradhan Mantri Jandhan Yojana (m) Women empowerment (n) HIV-AIDS Awareness Programme (o) Tobacco control programme (p) Voter awareness programme (q) Signal use plastic and its disposal awareness programme (r) Awareness programme on pocso act (s) International yoga day (t) Qaumi Ekta week etc.

NSS volunteers played major role during Covid-19 pandemic.

There are some special programmes exclusively for NSS volunteers of Ranchi University. In 2021 three students had been selected for Republic day parade camp, New Delhi. The other camps attended by NSS Volunteers of RU include- Adventure camps, National Youth Festival- 2020 in Lucknow, North East Zonal Youth Festival, National Youth parliament. Jharkhand Youtsav organised by the Govt. of Jharkhand, National Integration camps etc. NSS is playing an important role for the clean India campaign across the university. Volunteers are also active in social issue like women empowerment, gender equity, organising blood donation camp, organising skill development programme etc.

This year the NSS team has actively participated in the National Integration Camp 2020 in Agra (UP) and Hazaribag. It is also organising awareness programmes for Cashless Transactions, Ujjawala Yojana, Renewable Energy.
