Human Right is an important element of democracy which show the way to a social progress. Human rights not only provides a platform to the ideological contemplate but to a political debate too which are the pillars of democracy. The objective of this curriculum is to motivate people to take positive and peaceful action in support of human rights. Millions of people are still deprived of their basic fundamental rights; the program aims to bestow the young people about the violation of the Rights and highlight how one can do something about it.

India is considered as a world’s largest democracy in the world. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate human right ] education to rest of the curriculum to flourish the democracy which - would lead to a better future around the world with a dignified life, social cohesion and stability.

About Course

The foremost aim of the course is to introduce the students, to the values and culture of human rights. The structure and presentation of the various concepts are made in a simple manner largely without going into the theoretical intricacies that they innate with them.

This course is aimed at covering the diversity of issues in human rights today. The topics covered are selected in consultation with the students and are intended to allow an exploration of current concerns to human rights. The course intends to explore and discuss what is currently happening in selected areas of human rights, with a focus on human rights in the field, human rights programming, and the activities of organizations in promoting and protecting human rights.

About the Department

The Human Rights as subject was initiated by the order of University Grant Commission vide Letter No-_PL/286, dated-07/ 09/2010 in the year of 2010. Taking this into account, under the University Department of Sociology as a Self- Financing Course, during the Academic session 2010-2012 Ranchi University introduced the above course. Today the department is playing its part nicely with a massive number of students, developing a fine understanding of Human Rights and their duties.

Course Structure and Examination system of the M.A. Human Rights Education under University Department of Sociology, Ranchi University, Ranchi, Jharkhand.

There shall be a total sixteen theoretical paper carrying 100 marks each, including Report writing on the basis of field visit arranged by the department during first year of the M.A course and a Dissertation during the last year. The examination shall be conduct on annual basis, and students are eligible for upgrading themselves after successfully completion of the first year Examination.

The maximum number of intake students ts 90 in which 2 seats are reserved for the students who are under the B.P.L Category.

  • 1. Candidates admitted under BPL category are exempted from tuition fee.

  • 2. For other candidates, there is a provision for stipend too, funded by the Government of Jharkhand.

In the contemporary manifestation, human rights are a set of individual and collective rights that have been formally promoted and protected through international and domestic law since the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Student completing this two year M.A. programme in Human Rights Education may find suitable opening for them in the following fields :

  1. International organizations as UNITED NATIONS and their specialized entities like UNICEF, UNESCO, UNPFI, ILO, UNHRC etc.
  2. International bodied like Amnesty International, Red Cross, CRY, CARE, YMCA, Ford Foundation, IDRC, and Oxfam.
  3. Appointment in Corporate Houses and MNCs for implementing corporate social responsibility.
  4. Social service organizations like Old Age Homes, Age Care Centers, State and National Level NHRC.
  5. Self-employment and Entrepreneurial opportunities for establishing rural and urban counseling centers on Human Rights.
  6. Human Rights Consultancy Organizations run by Lawyers and legal experts.

  1. The massive number of students qualified the UGC-NET Exam in Human Rights.
  2. The alumni students are working as a Social Activist and associated with MNCs and working with NGOs (State and National level).
  3. Some of the students (Advocates/ Lawyers) that were having the background of law, after pursuing the course are now practicing in the field of Human Rights violation.
